Keep a 12-week log book

A log book covers 12 continuous weeks of how you usually drive. Its business-use percentage is then claimed for that income year and the next four.

Pick a car and the first day

A log book belongs to one car: its odometer at each end, and its business percentage. In Reports, choose the car or let DriveHub use your only car. Then tap Log book on the Start a 12-week log book step.

Pick the first day. Trips already recorded from that day count. Keep driving as you usually do until it ends.

  1. Open Reports and choose an Australian car in the vehicle filter.
  2. Under Ready to file?, tap Log book on the step Start a 12-week log book.
  3. Under Start your log book, pick the First day and tap Start log book.

Add a reason and odometer readings

The screen shows Day N of 84. For every business trip in these 12 weeks, add a reason and the start and end odometer readings. Add odometer readings on the first and last days of the period too.

The line Still to check, not counted yet shows how many trips still wait for an answer. Trips you have not answered do not count.

  1. Open the log book to see Business use so far and the trips to check.
  2. Answer each trip under Need to check, then add its reason and odometer readings.
  3. Add odometer readings on the first and last days with Add Odometer Reading.

Lock in the percentage

When the 12 weeks are complete, the screen shows 12 weeks complete and Business use over the 12 weeks. Tap Lock in to fix the percentage. The button stays off until the trips are answered, each business trip has a reason and odometer readings, and the first and last days have readings.

If the 12 weeks cross 30 June, Kept for lets you pick the income year. The one you pick is the first of the five it covers. After locking, you claim the percentage until the date shown, unless your driving changes. If it changes, Start a new log book.

Start Over clears this log book. The trips stay, and a locked percentage is kept under Earlier log books so you can put it back with Put back.

  1. Wait for 12 weeks complete and read Business use over the 12 weeks.
  2. Check the line Still to check, not counted yet, then tap Lock in.
  3. Tap Export the 12 weeks to get the log book as a report.

Set the method for the income year

The Australian car deduction card has a second screen for the income year. Edit Australian method and costs lets you choose Cents per kilometre or Log book · actual costs. The two amounts are alternatives and are never added together.

The app's own rate note says the cents-per-kilometre method is capped at 5 000 business kilometres per car per year, and DriveHub applies that cap. For the actual-costs method, keep receipts and add the car costs.

  1. In Reports, choose an Australian car and a full income year.
  2. On the Australian car deduction card, tap Edit Australian method and costs.
  3. Tap Set up income year, choose the Method and add each car cost with Add car cost.
